How to make a multimedia center with mythTV

I don't usually watch television. In Spain there is an important poverty of contents, and in addition it does not help the fact that a film with a duration of one hour and a half is transformed into a film of at least two hours with the amount of publicity they advertise.

After doing the center multimedia, this is my new form to watch television:
Once a week I program the essential programs for me, the films, some television series and sports like nba.
All this with the control and from a table of programs with which I don't have to worry about hours nor days, even it doesn't matter if they finally change the hour of programming, because the computer will be guided with the information that they send digitally with the channel and it will compare the names of the programs.

The computer even can record 2 programs that are being given simultaneously in different transmitters, because I have two tuners, if the channels are in the same multiplex, I can record them all, that is about 8 channels.

My partner, who watches more television than me, watches it by traditional form, although she is amazed by the possibility of stopping the tv whenever she wants, for example when somebody calls her by telephone, and later she continues watching tv from the moment it had been stopped, with the possibility of skipping some advertisements.
The most important thing for me is that the computer can record simultaneously what I had ordered to it, although it is showing another channel.
It also records everything with all the information and it automatically classifies it in the tables of recordings to accede later easily.

When I finally sit down to watch tv, I look the table of recordings and I see what's interesting for me; If it is a film, I will be able to watch it in dolby surround and with subtitles. In addition mythtv clears the adverts automatically. Can you wish something more?

There are very peculiar details, like being able to watch the programs a little faster without the voices sound to the makineros pitufos. This is done by standardizing the pitch of the voices when voices have been accelerated

La búsqueda es de lo más sencilla y rápida, o ver los videos que tengas grabados en el disco duro, seleccionando la caratula.

Evidentemente, también se pueden ver DVD's y VCD's, con detalles tan útiles como poder copiarlos en el disco duro con un botón del mando, y con la posibilidad de poderles hacer un transcode a otros formatos, por ejemplo a MPEG4, y con otras resoluciones para pasarlas directamente a la pda o para guardarla en un CD.

Mythtv aparte tiene otras opciones: videoteca, meteorología, juegos (MAME), etc...

Y lo más importante, es software libre con licencia GPL, tienes todas las fuentes disponibles, y si dispones de conocimientos suficientes puedes modificar todo a tu gusto o añadirle cosas.

Por ejemplo, yo he integrado el sistema de seguridad en el mythtv, de manera que con un botón del mando puedo ver las cámaras de seguridad que tengo instaladas cuando detectan un movimiento y también ver lo que han grabado.

Con la llegada de la televisión digital, tdt en españa, (dvb-t en el resto de Europa), se han mejorado muchos aspectos y se han abierto las puertas a mejoras futuras aún más importantes (alta definición, etc..)

Ahora mismo las cadenas emiten una señal con definición algo inferior al dvd, y emiten varios idiomas e incluso otro canal de sonido adicional AC-3 (dolby prologic).

Construirse un Mando:

Un único mando para todo.

Lo primero es tener un buen mando. Como los mandos que vienen con las tarjetas capturadoras dejan mucho que desear, yo opté por hacerme un circuito detector de infrarojos, el cual lo conecto por la tarjeta de sonido, y lo manejo con el driver Lirc.

Instalar Linux + MythTV:

El linux que yo he usado es una Debian experimental, con kernel 2.6.18.
Los drivers de las tarjetas dvb-t los bajé del CVS de linuxtv.org y los instalé sin mayor problema. Después es bueno formatear el disco duro con un sistema de ficheros XFS o JFS debido a que son muy rápidos borrando ficheros muy grandes, que es precisamente lo que tendremos nosotros con las grabaciones.
Una vez con el sistema básico solo falta instalar la base de datos mysql y finalmente el mythtv siguiendo las instrucciones. Mythtv es un programa descentralizado y se puede instalar en múltiples ordenadores, cada uno ofreciendo los sintonizadores y contenidos de los que disponga.
Una configuración común es tener un ordenador grande con todo en una habitación y luego una XBOX con linux dentro como caja tonta que te saca el contenido a la tele. Mi configuración es la más simple, un solo ordenador hace todo.

Se configura el Mythtv con myth-setup, se escanean los canales, se le dicen dónde están las carpetas con los videos y la música, y prácticamente ya está todo hecho.

Otros programas:

Hay otros programas multimedia para linux aún más potentes, como por ejemplo el vdr, pero MythTV es muy sencillo de utilizar,
y el WFA (wife factor aceptance o factor de aceptación de la parienta) es muy elevado, con lo que la mujer está contenta y seguramente nos dejará seguir haciendo futuros inventillos.

Con modificaciones y con tarjeta de satélite DVB-S, estos programas también se pueden usar para ver el digital + (de manera legal con CAM/tarjeta o ilegal con SoftCam/keys), pero es un tema complejo, requiere múltiples parches del código fuente y el resultado final es de dudosa legalidad.
